CHI Carrington receives Top 20 designation

CHI Carrington was recently named a 2018 Top 20 Critical Access Hospital for overall performance in the country. This is the fourth time since 2014, CHI St. Alexius Health, Carrington has been recognized with the Top 20 distinction.

The Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals, including CHI, Carrington, scored best among critical access hospitals as determined by The Chartis Center for Rural Health for overall performance. The National Rural Health Association (NRHA) recently announced the rankings, and an awards ceremony will be held during NRHA’s Critical Access Hospital Conference in September in Kansas City, Mo.

The Top 20 Critical Access Hospital “winners” are those hospitals who have achieved success in the overall performance based on a composite rating from eight indices of strength: inpatient market share, outpatient market share, quality, outcomes, patient perspectives, cost, charge and financial stability. This group was selected from The Chartis Center for Rural Health’s 2018 Top 100 Critical Access Hospital list, which was released earlier this year.

Those hospitals that have been recognized as Top 20 Critical Access Hospital “best practice recipients” have achieved success one of two key areas of performance:

Quality index: A rating of hospital performance based on the percentile rank across the five categories of Hospital Compare Process of Care measures.

Patient perspective index: A rating of hospital performance based on the percentile rank on two Hospital Compare HCAHPS measures (“Overall Rating” and “Highly Recommend).”

“CHI, Carrington is extremely proud of the efforts of its medical providers and staff who have contributed to our hospital achieving this designation once again,” said Mariann Doeling, RN, President of CHI St. Alexius Health, Carrington. “Our results as a top overall performing hospital in the United States means the communities we serve can count on us to deliver the local services they need now and in the future.”

In 2016, CHI, Carrington celebrated its 100th year of delivering local healthcare. Originally opened as the Carrington Hospital in 1916, the hospital was leased to the Presentation Sisters of the Fargo Diocese in 1941. The Presentation Sisters joined the Catholic Health Corporation of Omaha in 1980 and later became part of Catholic Health Initiatives.

CHI officially announced the formation of its regional health care system in April 2016. The system is the largest health care delivery system in central and western North Dakota and is comprised of a tertiary hospital in Bismarck, and critical access hospitals (CAHs) in Carrington, Dickinson, Devils Lake, Garrison, Turtle Lake, Williston and numerous clinics and outpatient services. CHI St. Alexius Health manages four CAHs in North Dakota- Ashley, Elgin, Linton, and Wishek, as well as Mobridge Regional Medical Center in Mobridge, S.D.

Catholic Health Initiatives, a nonprofit, faith-based health system formed in 1996 through the consolidation of four Catholic health systems, expresses its mission each day by creating and nurturing healthy communities in the hundreds of sites across the nation. One of the nation’s largest nonprofit health systems, the Englewood, Colo.-based CHI operates in 18 states and comprises 101 hospitals, including two academic health centers and major teaching hospitals as well as 29 critical-access facilities; community health-services organizations; accredited nursing colleges; home-health agencies; living communities; and other facilities and services that span the inpatient and outpatient continuum of care.
