Dakota Recreation Report - May 14, 2018

Outdoor notes:

*May 20: Turkey season closes.

Tournaments:

*May 19: Devils Lake, Creel Bay; Buffalo Lodge Lake.

*May 20: Lake Audubon.

Fishing:

*Devils Lake elevation, May 8: 1,449.83 feet above mean sea level (MSL).

*Stump Lake elevation: 1,449.85 MSL.

*Lake Sakakawea elevation: 1,843.09 MSL; 37,000 cubic feet per second average (CFS) Garrison Dam daily releases.

*N.D. Game & Fish Dept. Dist. game wardens: Runoff is minimal into Devils Lake area feeder creeks and coulees but a lot of anglers are still trying their luck for pike and walleye. Most pike and walleye spawned out. A few walleye from Clear and Antelope lakes, but little activity elsewhere. No reports from Missouri River System. Best river options are feeder creeks and streams along the Sheyenne River with lower than average runoff. Also try below dams with and rock rapids with jigs and soft plastics for pike and walleye.

*Devils Lake, Ed’s Bait Shop, Devils Lake: Good pike success around the bridges and coulees. Docks are getting in place throughout the lake.

*Devils Lake, Lakeview Lodge, Minnewaukan: Devils Lake is ice-free but water temperatures remain cold. Best success remains on northern feeder lakes.

*Devils Lake, West Bay Resort, Minnewaukan: No new reports.

*Devils Lake, Woodland Resort, Devils Lake: Devils Lake is ice-free. Look for more docks to get in place soon. Good for pike in the upper basin feeder coulees with some walleye success starting as well. Lake remains cold with limited activity yet.

*Foster County area lakes, Dry Dock, Carrington: Activity remains limited on area lakes.

*Jamestown Reservoir, Pioneer Bait & Tackle, Jamestown: Not much activity, although a few anglers still trying for some post-spawn pike success on area lakes.

*Jamestown Reservoir, Sooper Stop, Jamestown: Activity remains light with wind and cool water temperatures.

*Lake Ashtabula, Bayshore, Valley City: Lake is ice-free with a few anglers testing the waters for bass. Water temperatures remain cool. No walleye activity yet.

*Lake Sakakawea, Cenex Bait & Tackle, Garrison: Good pike success working the back bays of the east end of Lake Sakakawea. Try floating smelt or casting into the grass. Occasional walleye but ice still on the east end earlier in the week. Lake Audubon fair for walleye with some small boats accessing on the east end. North Lake open and producing pike.

*Lake Sakakawea, Indian Hills Resort, Garrison: Store opens May 25. Courtesy dock in place and usable.

*Lake Sakakawea/Lake Audubon/Missouri River, Scott’s Bait and Tackle, Pick City: Continued boat activity in the Missouri River tailrace. Try jigs and minnows around the Spillway Channel Inlet for pike with occasional walleye. Best success in the morning. Try the rocks from shore at night for walleye. Lake Sakakawea fair for pike in the back bays.

*Lonetree WMA area lakes, Harvey: Try wind-blown shorelines from shore for walleye on area lakes. Look for even better success as water temperatures continue warming. Best success is on windy days.

*Pipestem Reservoir, Pioneer Bait & Tackle, Jamestown: Limited reports.

*Pipestem Reservoir, Sooper Stop, Jamestown: No reports.

*Spiritwood Lake, Pioneer Bait & Tackle, Jamestown: Quiet.

*Spiritwood Lake, Sooper Stop, Jamestown: Not much activity.

N.D. river canoeing/kayaking elevation & streamflow:

*James River, Kensal: River stage, 4.63 feet; streamflow, 185 CFS.

*Pembina River, Walhalla: River stage, 2.95 feet.

*Red River, Grand Forks: River stage, 18.71 feet.

*Sheyenne River, Warwick: River stage, 3.29 feet.
