Dollars for Scholars awards $16,700 in scholarships to seniors

The New Rockford Dollars for Scholars was established in 2004 and has since grown to include an 11-member volunteer board, which consists of teachers, parents, community members and business owners. It is through the hard work of these volunteers and the monetary support of New Rockford-Sheyenne (NR-S) alumni, business owners, and community members that Dollar for Scholars have provided scholarships to over 270 NR-S graduating seniors.

The Dollar for Scholars application process is based a merit-based scoring system based on academic grades, ACT score, work experience, extracurricular involvement, awards received, goals and aspirations, and references. 

This year, Dollars for Scholars awarded 36 scholarships to 13 NR-S seniors.

$200 Dean and Edith Gehrtz Scholarship, Jared Hartl.

$500 New Rockford Lions Club, Lauren Roscoe.

The $500 Kenneth Rose Scholarship is sponsored by the local Dollars for Scholars chapter and was established from the proceeds of the sale of New Rockford maps hand drawn by artist and New Rockford native Kenneth Rose. This year’s recipient is Abby Makay.

The Anna Modin Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by the local Dollars for Scholars and is awarded annually to a student majoring in an educational field. This year’s scholarship goes to Lauren Roscoe.

$600 Latte Lobby Coffee Ladies, Lois Gibson.

The $600 Paulette Seiler Memorial Scholarship is awarded to someone going into the medical field. This year's recipient of the award is Nicole Willey.

$600 Community Credit Union, Justin Nystrom.

The Emily Garnaas and Paula Myhre Memorial Scholarship was established by Jon Garnaas and family of Iowa to honor the memories of Jon's mother Emily and cousin Paula. These scholarships are to be awarded to students who have strong ties to the Sheyenne community. This year, two students received the scholarship: Shayla Thumb and Wilson Howard.

$1,000 Roughrider Feeds- Jeff and Leann Schafer, Gaius Arroyo.

$1,000 Nicolai Chiropractic, Miranda Johnson.

$1,000 New Rockford Dollars for Scholars, Lauren Roscoe.

The final scholarships are in memory of David L. Rodgers and are presented to seniors going into music. Three $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Nick Hovey, Micah Nicolai and Jared Hartl.

The local Dollars for Scholars chapter is led by the following volunteers: Rachel Holzwarth, Tubby Bymoen, Jenna Weisenburger, Karla Berglund, Annette Hovey, Kent Myhre, Donna Gedrose, Kelsey Turcotte, Penny Schuster, Kristi Frahm and Cherry Heinz.
