New Rockford Transcript awarded 6 times in 2018 North Dakota Better Newspaper Contest

Staff and correspondents of the New Rockford Transcript received six awards at the 2018 North Dakota Newspaper Association (NDNA) Better Newspaper Contest as revealed on Friday, May 4 at the organization’s annual conference.

The Transcript is judged among its peers in the mid-size weekly division, which includes N.D. newspapers published weekly that have circulations of 1,000-1,999. Awards were received for work published during 2017. Newspapers submitted entries for consideration, which were compared and ranked by newspaper professionals in Nevada this year.

The big win for the staff came in the Special Advertising Section category. The team took first place for its eight-page feature to promote Winterfest and hometown shopping during the holidays. That special edition of the County Extra was published on November 26. This is the second year in a row that the paper has earned the first place award in this category for the Winterfest section.

Graphic designer Ashley Schuster earned third place for her graphic map illustrating the move of the former Dakota Roadhouse restaurant. The map, which featured a drone photo, was on the front page of the October 9 edition.

Staff and correspondents were also awarded four honorable mention certificates. Correspondent Kristi Frahm’s “Where Are They Now?” alumni series received honorable mention in the feature reporting series category. An installment of that series is published once per month.

Publisher Amy Wobbema earned three honorable mention awards, in the following categories:

 1) In the Agricultural Photo category, for her photo taken from the top of the Equity Cooperative Elevator in Sheyenne. That photo appeared in the August 14 issue.

 2) In the Reporting Series category, for her series on the New Rockford-Sheyenne School improvement bond election entitled “The 3 Million Dollar Question.” There were three articles in that series, which were published on September 4, 18 and 25.
