Despite some really nasty weather conditions on Saturday June 2, the Eddy County Sheriff's Annual Youth Fishing Derby went on as scheduled, rain or shine. Participants of all ages had a great time taking a pretty good haul of fish out of the James River.
In the category for participants ages 2-6 years old, C.J. Schmaltz caught the largest fish, which was a northern pike that weighed 3.8 pounds. Brelle Dauenhauer came in second place with a northern pike that weighed 3.3 pounds. Rynna Jorgenson caught a northern pike that weighed 2.4 pounds and received third place.
In the 7-10 age category, first place went to Alex Weisenburger, who caught the largest fish. His fish was a northern pike that weighed 5.12 pounds, which was also the largest fish of the day. Austin Weisenburger came in second place with his northern pike that weighed 1.6 pounds. Third place was William Jorgenson's northern pike that weighed 12 ounces.
In the 11-16 age group, first place went to Dakota Clelland, who brought in a northern pike that weighed 3.6 pounds. Mason Schuster took second with a northern pike that weighed 2.2 pounds. Third place went to Ashtyn Simmons who landed a northern pike that weighed 1.4 pounds.
