The caterpillar and the butterfly.

Perhaps you know this saying; “The caterpillar thinks it’s the end of the world, but the butterfly knows it’s only the beginning.”

I really like this saying because I can picture in my mind the fat caterpillar climbing up the stick and making a cocoon around itself. The caterpillar is convinced this is the end and is mourning how good life has been with the constant eating and the enjoyment the sunshine. The caterpillar is anxious to understand what will happen once the cocoon is completed, and worries about the unknown. But the butterfly, the beautiful butterfly has everything to look forward to. Breaking out of the cocoon the butterfly experiences a new beginning. A new life to learn, experience and grow.

The caterpillar is clueless. Sometimes I think we are as clueless as the caterpillar. If the caterpillar only knew that the end would result in a new beginning. A new body; no longer made for crawling but for flying. No longer fat, furry and worm-like, but rather weightless with delicate beautiful wings. The butterfly will fly and soar above the flowers, and experience life in new ways.

We are called in faith to believe and trust in God’s power to guide our lives. God has promised to be with us in all the circumstances of our lives. Yet it can be difficult to find faith when we are focused on the unknowns. As you face the unanswered questions in life, the whys, the how comes, the sufferings, the tragedies, ask yourself, “Why am I so worried?” We come to God with our human condition of sin. We question God and so often but we do not wait for an answer. God has promised us eternal life through his son, Jesus, and that is all we need to know. God is with us as we face all of life, here and in the world to come.
