Obituary: Dorothy S. Peterson

Dorothy S. Peterson, 94, of Carrington, N.D., passed away Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018 at Golden Acres Manor of Carrington.

Dorothy, known to her family as "Dot", was born to Helen (Linde) and Anthony Schuster of Melville, N.D. on May 24, 1924. The youngest of three children, she attended grade school in Walters Township in Stutsman County and graduated from Carrington High School in 1942. Like many rural students of the time, Dorothy boarded in town and spent weekends on the parental farm. After graduation she worked at the Carrington JCPenney store for five years.

In June of 1947, she married Curtis Peterson of Dodgeville, Wis. Many of their travels were family visits to Wisconsin. Four children were born to them; a daughter, Lynne, and three sons, Roger, Rick and Bruce.

Dorothy was a "stay at home mom" until 1967 when she accepted the job of deputy treasurer for Foster County. She was appointed treasurer in 1978, following the death of Florence Smith and served in that position for over 19 years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the VFW Auxiliary, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Her husband Curtis suffered a debilitating stroke in 1972 and Dorothy cared for him at home while continuing to serve as treasurer. In 1992 Curtis moved into Golden Acres. Dorothy resigned from the treasurer position in 1998 following a severe illness and joined Curtis at Golden Acres. Curtis passed away later that same year.

Dorothy is survived by three sons; Roger (Veronica), Walnut Grove, Calif., Rick, Martinez, Calif., Bruce (Barbara), Auburn, Calif.; her son-in-law, John Holmes, Washington, D.C.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her husband Curtis; her parents Anthony and Helen Schuster; her daughter Lynne; one brother Ben (Coralee) Schuster; and one sister Ruth (Ervin) Messmer.
