Who fares better in the snow- Rockets or Tornadoes? Well, if the football game between the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets and the Cavalier Tornadoes on Friday, Oct. 5 was any indication, it's an intense battle of wills. Snow fell overnight on Thursday, covering the Rockets' playing field on Friday morning. Volunteers cleaned off the field the best they could to prepare for the big game, as it was Homecoming, senior night and the last contest of the regular season all at the same time. The new scoreboard, paid for by generous donations from the Rocket Boosters, New Rockford-Sheyenne School, New Rockford Area Betterment Corporation and Brew Restaurants, proudly counted down the minutes and displayed the score. The Rockets prevailed in a defense-heavy contest, earning their first Region Championship since 2012.
An excellent crowd was on hand to watch the Rockets go up against a formidable opponent on Homecoming and Senior Night Friday, Oct. 5.
Cavalier’s defensive front put out an impressive effort, holding NR-S to its lowest offensive total of the season.
With its win and undefeated regular season finish, New Rockford-Sheyenne jumped from No. 4 to No. 3 in the final N.D. 9-man football poll of the season, released Oct. 10. All of the top five ranked teams in 9-man are undefeated, which will make the playoffs interesting.
The Rockets rested last weekend, for they earned a first round bye as Region 2 Champions. They play host to the winner of the first round contest between Hankinson and Kidder County on Oct. 20.
