A news story in the Jan. 10, 1902, “Transcript” said that the previous week [on Jan. 1] former Eddy County resident and current Velva grain buyer J.C. Fay had been walking in an alley behind the Kirkwood Hotel in Velva when a gust of wind blew some bricks off the chimney.
