Obituary: Kate Langley

On Oct. 22, 2018, the communities of Crosby, N.D. and Warwick, N.D. lost one of their biggest hearts, Kate Deloris Langley.

Funeral services were held 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Crosby with Pastor Emily Shipman officiating. A Family service was held at 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 28 at the Warwick Lutheran Church in Warwick. Burial followed on Sunday, Oct. 28 at the Warwick Cemetery. Visitation took place one hour before the services.

Kate was born Nov. 1, 1983 in New Rockford, N.D. to Gene and Peggy Langley. Raised on a farm and ranch in rural Warwick, Kate learned the value of hard work, integrity and a good laugh. Throughout high school, Kate excelled at both academics and sports. Many of Kate's summers were spent playing basketball with her family, often playing HORSE where she could always make Dad's trick shots – even from the grassy knoll in the yard. Kate attended Sheyenne Public School and graduated with honors in 2002. She continued her collegiate studies at Jamestown College and graduated in May 2006 with a Bachelor's Degree in History Education. Upon graduation she obtained a position at Divide County Public School in Crosby, where she was currently teaching social studies to 7th and 8th grade students. Kate loved her students, and she was very involved with them, serving as the advisor for the yearbook committee and coaching basketball. In her time away from teaching, Kate managed the Crosby Country Club and whipped up delicious philly cheesesteaks at The Moose. She loved spending time with her large group of friends and visiting Mom and Dad in Arizona, where they would go on adventures to the Grand Canyon, Lake Havasu, or wherever Mom found a swap meet.

Kate had a kind spirit and often served as a protector. A protector for her friends, students, and, most importantly, her family. With her "don't mess with me attitude," she shielded her little sister from bullies in middle school and made sure no one ever messed with a Langley. Kate was never one to not speak her mind, whether it was politics, her Kansas Jayhawks, or arguing with her sisters about which Backstreet Boy was the best. Kate's laugh was infectious, and she was a magnet for some of the area's most interesting personalities. She never met someone with whom she couldn't shoot the breeze. She never met someone whom she couldn't make laugh, and she never met someone she couldn't win over. This was evidenced by Kate's volume of friends – many of whom treated her like family.

Most of all, Kate had a lot of love. Love for her friends. Love for her family.Love for her students. And love for her beloved cat, Bogey. Our family would like to thank the Divide County School staff and students, the Crosby Country Club, and community members in Crosby who welcomed our Katie Bear and helped her grow into the wonderful woman she became. We are forever grateful that you all loved her as much as we do. Crosby was truly Kate's home away from home.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you direct your memorial gifts to the Kate Langley Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will provide graduates of Divide County High School support to attend the postsecondary institution of their choice.
