Rockets chase Squirrels for 20-point win at Hillsboro

After earning some respect from the Class B pollsters, the New Rockford-Sheyenne boys' basketball squad justified that appraisal of their level of play with an impressive victory at the Hillsboro Holiday Hoops jamboree Friday, Dec. 28.

The Rockets took down a respectable opponent in the Central Cass Squirrels with relative ease, 82-62, thanks to dual 20-plus point outings by Teddy Allmaras (28 points) and Bo Belquist (21) in the Hillsboro High School gym.

Hunter Thompson also played a strong supporting role with 11 points in the victory.

Central Cass, now 3-3 on the season after earlier close losses to top-ranked Thompson and a two-point overtime defeat at the hands of Grafton, were led by Christian Lietz's 13 points and 11 more from Zach Koetz.

With the win, NR-S improved to 4-1 for the pre-District 7 slate, and were one of six teams to receive votes in the final poll of the year released this past Monday.

Dangerous winter conditions postponed half of the Thursday, Dec. 27 schedule at Holiday Hoops, with a planned game against the May-Port-CG Patriots at Central Valley High School in Buxton being one of those casualties. Any future date to play the NR-S/MPCG game was unknown at press time.

The Rockets head into their District 7 obligations for two conference matchups beginning Tuesday night, Jan. 8, as they host the Warwick Warriors. On Friday, Jan. 11, the Knights of Dakota Prairie will be the opponent. Both sets of games in the NRSHS Gym will start at 4:30 p.m. on their respective dates with junior high play, followed by the junior varsity and varsity games.
