When everything comes together offensively, playing basketball can be a fun endeavor indeed, not to mention a treat for the fans.
The newly-minted 10th-ranked team in Class B, New Rockford-Sheyenne, blitzed the Warwick Warriors out of the gates for 31 first quarter points, and kept up the tempo for a full 32 minutes to take a 96-58 rout Tuesday night, Jan. 8 in New Rockford.
The District 7 opener for both teams featured a shooting exhibition from the Rockets, in which they connected on 12 three-point shots and never scored less than 21 points in any one stanza.
Six of those dozen treys came from a pair of players. Parker Granger and Luke Ystaas had identical 11-point boxscores, and Bo Belquist drilled two more to finish with a team-high 18 points.
In all, five total NR-S players scored double figures.Hunter Thompson added 16 more points, along with a solid supporting outing from Nathan Holzwarth (13 points in the win). Eleven different players saw playing time for NR-S during the contest.
Leading Warwick (2-5, 0-1 District 7) with 16 points was Eric Belgarde, who connected on four trifectas of his own. Paul Thiele additionally contributed 13 points for the Warriors.
The biggest game of the young season for NR-S looms tonight (Jan. 14), in the form of a showdown in Fort Totten with second-ranked and undefeated Four Winds-Minnewaukan. The Region 4 traditional powerhouse sports an 8-0 record and wins over several ranked or previously-ranked schools to their credit.
A full five-game slate for the district rivals begins at 3:30 p.m. at FWHS with the 7th grade game, followed by 8th grade, C, B and varsity.
The Rockets (5-1, 1-0) board the bus once again this Thursday, traveling to Cando to take on North Star. The schedule with the Bearcats begins with junior high play at 4:30 p.m.
