NR-S falls to FW-M Indians by 11

Center Bronson Walter’s 24 points sparked the fourth-ranked Indians to a 67-56 win over the ninth-ranked Rockets this past Monday evening in Fort Totten, and gave them an early lead in the District 7 regular season race.

The Rockets (7-2, 2-1 in district play) couldn’t withstand FW-M’s trademark pressure in the first half, as the Indians, still smarting from a last-second 58-57 loss at Hillsboro-Central Valley on Jan. 11, put together a 40-21 advantage at the half.

In the final 16 minutes, NR-S cut into the FW-M lead by outscoring the home squad by four points in each quarter, but did not mount a serious threat.

Junior forward Hunter Thompson finished with 17 points for the Rockets. Bo Belquist and Tucker Longnecker each had 10.

Jayden Yankton and Doug Yankton aided the Indians’ efforts with 13 and 11 points.

By earning the victory, FW-M improved to 9-1 against one of the toughest schedules in the state. It was the Indians’ first district game of the 2018-19 campaign.

NR-S returns to District 7 play this week, traveling to Harvey Tuesday night to face the HWC Hornets, and hosting a Friday night game with Lakota. Both the Rockets’ boys’ and girls’ teams will travel to Langdon on Saturday for four games of JV and varsity play opposite Langdon/Edmore/Munich. starting at 11 a.m.
