Dakota Recreation Report for Feb. 4, 2019

Outdoor notes:

*Ice is never completely safe. Avoid areas with vegetation, moving water, pressure ridges and springs. Check conditions as you go along on the ice.

*Remember to keep any fish caught in 20 feet of water and deeper because they don’t survive coming up from those depths.

*Spring turkey applications now available online, (gf.nd.gov).

*It’s illegal to chase, harasses, or pursue all wildlife – including coyotes – with any motorized vehicle.

*Feb. 9: Red River RMEF banquet, Grand Forks Alerus Center, 5 p.m.

*Feb. 13: Spring turkey applications due.

Tournaments:

*Feb. 9: Lake Ashtabula, Frettim Lake.

Fishing:

*Devils Lake elevation, Jan. 29: 1,448.21 feet above mean sea level (MSL).

*Stump Lake elevation: 1,448.17 MSL.

*Lake Sakakawea elevation: 1,839.05 MSL; 14,000 cubic feet per second average (CFS) Garrison Dam daily releases.

*N.D. Game and Fish Dept. Dist. game wardens: No east-central lakes or Devils Lake reports. Lake Audubon generally slow. No Lake Sakakawea reports.

*Devils Lake, Ed’s Bait Shop, Devils Lake: Moving around on Devils Lake becoming more difficult with recent snow and wind. Generally slow success.

*Devils Lake, Lakeview Lodge, Minnewaukan: Spotty and inconsistent perch success. Try 35 to 50 feet but be prepared to keep anything taken from those depths. A few walleye mixed in from shallower water.

*Devils Lake, West Bay Resort, Minnewaukan:

*Devils Lake, Woodland Resort, Devils Lake: Cold weather limiting activity and overall success slowed. More snow is on the lake and it’s tougher to get around. Be prepared and bring a shovel and rope.

*Foster County area lakes, Dry Dock, Carrington: Access becoming difficult with little activity on area lakes.

*Jamestown Reservoir, Pioneer Bait and Tackle, Jamestown: Little activity on area lakes. Access could become difficult with snow and wind.

*Jamestown Reservoir, Sooper Stop, Jamestown: Limited activity throughout area lakes with cold and snow.

*Lake Ashtabula, Ashtabula Crossing, Luverne: Little activity.

*Lake Ashtabula, Bayshore, Valley City: Access still OK on Lake Ashtabula with wind blowing snow off much of the ice. Anglers still heading out but overall success is somewhat slow. Access on smaller lakes becoming more difficult.

*Lake Sakakawea, Cenex Bait and Tackle, Garrison: Weather limiting activity but Lake Audubon producing some walleye. The lake has more snow on the ice so be prepared in the event of getting stuck. Some spearfishing activity on east end Lake Sakakawea back bays with some success. Try Steinke or Douglas bays. Weather permitting, anglers finding some walleye in the Missouri River tailrace.

*Lake Sakakawea/Lake Audubon/Missouri River, Scott’s Bait and Tackle, Pick City: Weather permitting, look for a morning and evening walleye bite from the rocks off shore and wing walls on the Missouri River tailrace. Be cautious of slippery rocks on the rocks. East end of Lake Sakakawea slow.

*Lonetree WMA area lakes, Harvey: Hit-and-miss success throughout area lakes.

*Pipestem Reservoir, Pioneer Bait and Tackle, Jamestown: Not much activity.

*Pipestem Reservoir, Sooper Stop, Jamestown: No new reports.

*Spiritwood Lake, Pioneer Bait and Tackle, Jamestown: No reports.

*Spiritwood Lake, Sooper Stop, Jamestown: Little activity.

N.D. Parks and Recreation Dept. ski trails (conditions can vary):

*Turtle River, Arvilla: Weather permitting, all trails were groomed and in fair to good condition.

Downhill skiing (conditions can vary):

*Bottineau Winter Park, Bottineau: 10- to 24-inch base with beginner runs, seven runs, seven tubing lanes, with two jumps and one rail Terrain Park open.

*Buena Vista Ski Area, Bemidji, Minn .: 18- to 36-inch machine groomed base with 16 runs and Bear Track Terrain Park open.

*Frostfire Ski Area, Walhalla: Delayed open for the season.

*Huff Hills, Mandan: 26- to 30-inch powder, packed powder base. Seven groomed runs and lifts open depending on weather.

*Terry Peak, Lead, S.D .: Four lifts open with 28 runs open with 78 accumulated inches of snow for the season.

Snowmobile N.D. (conditions can vary):

*East-central Valley (Cass and Richland counties): Trails open and in good condition with 3- to 6-inch base.

*Lake Region (Nelson and Ramsey counties): Trails 1, 2 (Devils Lake to Webster), 3 (Webster to Calio), 5 (Doyon to warming house) and 6 (Doyon to Lakota) open with 3- to 9-inch base. Fair to good condition.

*Missouri Valley (Emmons and Burleigh counties): 3- to 5-inch base with Sterling and Lincoln trails open. Some drifting.

*North-central (Benson, McHenry, Pierce, Ramsey, and Towner counties): NC 1, 2, and 3 trails closed but all other trails are open with 4- to 5-inch base. Fair to good condition but some icy areas.

*Northeast (Cavalier, Pembina and Walsh counties): 4- to 10-inch base with Moonlight Gorge trail open from Langdon to the east. NESCA, Tetrault, Tri-county and Parsite trails open. North Nekoma Trailblazers trail open from Langdon to Nekoma to Milton.

*Sno-Trails (Bottineau, McHenry, Renville, and Ward counties) 2- to 5-inch base with Kramer to Bottineau trail open.

*Southern Valley (Richland County): All trails open with 4- to 7-inch base. Fair conditions with ice in some areas.

*All other trails remain closed.
