Carrington's Shopko slated for closure

Shopko filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Jan. 16, announcing it would close stores across the country. Among them were four stores in North Dakota: Oakes, Stanley, Lisbon and Mayville.

On Wednesday, Feb. 6, the company added to the closure list, and this time included the Shopko Hometown store in neighboring Carrington. Six other N.D. communities will also lose their Shopko stores this spring, according to the release: Rolla, Bowman, Grafton, Cavalier, Rugby and Beulah.

In all, Shopko identified 250 stores around the nation which will close or have already closed. Until last month, Shopko said it operated more than 360 stores in 26 states. The list of axed stores and their anticipated closing dates is available at info.shopko.com/closing-locations.pdf.

The closure process for the Carrington store will begin in March, and the store will officially close on or around May 12, according to the release. The retailer will have shuttered almost 70 percent of its locations by that time.

The company cited assets of less than $1 billion and debts between $1 billion and $10 billion when it filed for bankruptcy protection in January.
