Time to let the cards fall where they may.
New Rockford-Sheyenne put themselves in prime position to succeed in the glaring lights of playoff basketball with a 17-2 record, and ended their regular season with two big victories.
Facing the Midkota Mustangs, the Rockets rode a quintet of double-digit scorers for an 83-47 win February 14 in Glenfield, and finished off their season with a makeup game this past Tuesday against Rolette-Wolford. NR-S took that one in easy fashion as well, 73-38.
Top scorers for the Rockets in the first matchup were Bo Belquist with 20 points, and Hunter Thompson and Tucker Longnecker finished with 16 and 15 in NR-S’ ledger. In addition, 11-point games came from Teddy Allmaras and Nathan Holzwarth.
Midkota (3-15), who trailed by just four points at the first quarter horn, 22-18, was led by 15 points from freshman Logan Topp. Jory Boote and John Edland also knocked on the door of double figures with nine points each.
Allmaras keyed the Rockets’ efforts in Rolette on Feb. 19, scoring 13 points to finish tops among 10 different NR-S players to make the books. Belquist and Longnecker also had twin 12-point outings.
Cole Slaubaugh’s 16 points were a game-high for Rolette-Wolford, who fell to 1-18 for the season.
The second-seeded Rockets began play this past Friday at the District 7 Boys’ Basketball Tournament by taking on seventh seed HWC (2-16). Four Winds-Minnewaukan, the top overall seed at 16-3, earned the first round bye.
Other first round games featured #3 Dakota Prairie against #6 Warwick, and #4 Benson County took on #5 Lakota. NR-S would face the Dakota Prairie/Warwick winner the following evening with a victory over the Hornets.
