This week, there was no recipe to make up for a sizable first quarter deficit, and the NR-S Rockets' girls' basketball season finished with a one-and-done defeat at the Region 4 Tournament last Monday night.
At the penultimate postseason event before this weekend's State B in Grand Forks, the Rockets were blitzed out of the gates by the Dunseith Dragons, and the District 8 runners-up maintained a double-digit lead throughout the night to end NR-S' run, 62-50, in the quarterfinals at the Sports Center in Devils Lake.
Dunseith freshman Rozalind Strong finished with 21 points in the contest, including nine in the first period. Lexius Davis and Caitlyn Davis also drilled three-pointers in the quarter, along with Strong, to give the mythical beasts a 24-10 lead after eight minutes elapsed.
From then on, the Rockets, more or less, played even with Dunseith. Junior Hannah Haley had 12 of her team-high 19 points in the second and third quarters, and Dani Bjerke also posted double figures with 15.
The trio of Davises - Lexius, Caitlyn and Brailyn - scored 32 of Dunseith's 62 points.
With the win, the Dragons advanced to face Four Winds-Minnewaukan, the District 7 regular season and tournament champion, in the semifinals. Their aspirations for Grand Forks ended there, with FW-M taking a 67-48 victory to advance to the championship against Langdon/Edmore/Munich.
Defeat at Region 4 finalized the Rockets' season record at 10-13, and also marked the conclusion of the prep girls' basketball careers for Rocket seniors Allison Dockter and Carli Lies. Their contributions on and off the court for the NR-S program, as athletes and students, will be missed.
