For weeks, NR-S archers have been waking up before dawn- and not just for those buses leaving early on Saturday mornings. We're talking weekdays, before school, as early as 7 a.m. to get in their practice time. For many, the time is paying off and their techniques are improving.
This is the third year that archery has been an extra-curricular activity at NR-S. In that time, we have seen the team grow from a group of beginners to a team with advanced skills and abilities.
In the most recent tournament, held at Wolford, N.D., on Saturday, March 2, the Rockets did indeed shine.
Archery coach Jamie Risovi said, "What an INCREDIBLE tournament at Wolford today!! Seven Rocket archers were medal winners."
That's right, seven students went arrow-tip to arrow-tip with archers from around the region and finished at the top of their divisions.
For elementary girls, Ava Peterson placed first and Bailey Baumbach second.
In the elementary boys division, Shaun Reimche placed first and Alex Weisenburger finished second.
Among the middle school girls, Kyria Dockter placed first, and Hunter Genre placed second among the middle school boys.
Sophomore Koven Walford not only took first among the high school boys, but he was also named the Overall Top Male Archer for the tournament.
Other Top 10 finishers in their respective divisions were Alivia Yri, Kaci Weisenburger, Rikka Gudmunson, Layton Jacobson, Eli Alfstad, Brandyn Abell, Connor Knatterud, Keaton Cudworth, Bradyn Collier, Jesus Rodriguez and Mark McDowell. In addition, 23 archers shot their personal best scores.
Fun with Family
While the March 9 tournament at Rolla was canceled due to bad weather, NR-S archers geared up for their own kind of tournament. The first-ever family archery night was held on Tuesday, March 12.
There were a total of 45 partner teams, which consisted of one young archer and one adult guest, who participated in the evening. The expanse of skill sets among the teams was certainly impressive as seasoned archers went up against first-timers in flight. Spirits were high as the arrows took to the sky, and those who came to watch the tournament were certainly entertained.
On to State
The National Archery in the Schools Program State tournament will bring archers back to Minot on March 22 and 23 at the North Dakota State Fair Center. The Rockets will compete in the 3D tournament on Friday evening and return Saturday morning for the bullseye tournament.
The top 10 individuals in each division qualify for the Eastern Nationals, which will be held May 9-11 in Louisville, Ky. Last year five Rocket archers competed in the national tournament.
