Dakota Recreation Report- April 22, 2019

Outdoor notes:

*April 22: Earth Day.

Fishing:

*Devils Lake elevation, April 16: 1,448.67 feet above mean sea level (MSL).

*Stump Lake elevation: 1,448.62 MSL.

*Lake Sakakawea elevation: 1,845.54 MSL; 12,900 cubic feet per second average (CFS) Garrison Dam daily releases.

*N.D. Game and Fish Dept. Dist. game wardens: Little to no activity on east-central area lakes as anglers wait for ice-out. Devils Lake slowly starting to open along the edges but not much activity. No Missouri River System reports.

*Devils Lake, Ed’s Bait Shop, Devils Lake: Channel A producing good pike success. Also try any of the bridges or along Highway 281. Try smelt, herring or jigs and plastics. Occasional walleye mixed in.

*Devils Lake, Lakeview Lodge, Minnewaukan: No activity with the lake transitioning to open water. Not much coulee runoff yet, either.

*Devils Lake, West Bay Resort, Minnewaukan: No new reports as the lake transitions to open water.

*Devils Lake, Woodland Resort, Devils Lake: Shorelines starting to open but no activity.

*Foster County area lakes, Dry Dock, Carrington: No new reports with anglers generally waiting for enough open water on area lakes to put boats in or shore-fish for pike.

*Jamestown Reservoir, Pioneer Bait and Tackle, Jamestown: Some activity on the James River but little activity on area lakes or the reservoir, although shorelines are starting to open up.

*Jamestown Reservoir, Sooper Stop, Jamestown: Little activity throughout area lakes as they open up but not all are completely ice-free.

*Lake Ashtabula, Ashtabula Crossing, Luverne: No activity with the lake opening up and a mix of ice and open water. River and low-head dams are running high with little activity.

*Lake Ashtabula, Bayshore, Valley City: Lake still has ice but conditions are deteriorating with no activity.

*Lake Sakakawea, Cenex Bait and Tackle, Garrison: Some pike success from shore on the east end of Lake Sakakawea. Try smelt. Missouri River slowed with lower Garrison Dam releases. Try to locate deeper pockets of water for walleye.

*Lake Sakakawea/Lake Audubon/Missouri River, Scott’s Bait and Tackle, Pick City: Continued walleye success on the Missouri River, weather permitting. Try jigs and minnows from boats with a variety of presentations in the chutes. Access can be difficult with fluctuating releases, especially for larger boats. A little slower success from shore along the rocks but continue trying crankbaits. Good pike success from shore along the east end of Lake Sakakawea. Try smelt or spoons.

*Lonetree WMA area lakes, Harvey: Look for some nice-sized walleye from shore on area lakes that are open along the shoreline.

*Pipestem Reservoir, Pioneer Bait and Tackle, Jamestown: No new reports.

*Pipestem Reservoir, Sooper Stop, Jamestown: Not much activity.

*Spiritwood Lake, Pioneer Bait and Tackle, Jamestown: Little activity.

*Spiritwood Lake, Sooper Stop, Jamestown: No new reports.

Migration:

*Good numbers of light geese moving over northeast N.D. and the Devils Lake area.

N.D. rivers:

*James River, Kensal: River stage, 7.69 feet; streamflow, 723 CFS.

*Pembina River, Walhalla: River stage, 6.40 feet; 1,.720 CFS.

*Red River, Grand Forks: River stage, 44.84 feet; streamflow, 54,600 CFS.

*Sheyenne River, Warwick: River stage, 4.09 feet; streamflow, 341 CFS.
