Marlys Koenig Welstad, 91, Minot, N.D., passed away April 8, 2019, at Maple View Memory Care.
Marlys Jeanette Hagen was born on Apri l4, 1928, the daughter of Melvin and Jenny (Nelson) Hagen, in rural Hamberg, N.D. She attended a rural public school until the eighth grade, then went to high school in New Rockford and graduated from Maddock Agricultural School. Marlys received her Standard Teaching Certificate from Minot State Teachers College.
She taught two years in a rural school, where she met Fred Koenig through his niece, Lillian. Marlys and Fred were married in 1949. She was also once married to Sherman Welstad.
Marlys was involved with the Manfred Community Homemakers Club a member of the First
Baptist Church in Fessenden, and then joined St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Minot.
Her loving family includes daughters: Shirley Freeze, Murfreesboro, Tenn., Frances (Ken) Kostad, Minot, and Connie (Richard) Oasheim, Cavalier, N.D.; nine grandchildren: 17 great-grandchildren; brother, Delmer Hagen, Sheyenne, N.D.; sister, Diane (Edward) Bratvold, Inner Grove Heights, Minn.; sister-in-law, Darla Hagen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred Koenig; brothers, Virgil Hagen, and Sherman Hagen; son-in law, Darrell Freeze; and sister-in-law, LaVonne Hagen.
