Carrington native commissioned as Captain in Washington, D.C., ceremony

During a formal ceremony at Patton Hall on the grounds of Fort Meyer, Va., Carrington native Garrett Boyer was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Army.

Boyer, 32, was sworn in by Retired Colonel Daniel Gall, a former Medical Services Officer of 30 years. Gall served with the 44th Medical Brigade and the 82nd Airborne Division and now serves at the Pentagon as a key staff advisor to the Surgeon General for policies, procedures, and management related to military medicine.

The captains' rank, two vertical bars joined by two smaller horizontal bars, was pinned on Captain Boyer's uniform by his wife, Dr. Laura Cusumano, and his parents, Gary and Marlene Boyer of Carrington.

Captain Boyer attended Officer Candidate School with the Minnesota National Guard.

Captain Boyer is now completing doctoral studies in clinical psychology at Divine Mercy University in Arlington, Va. He is participating in a neuropsychology externship at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md.

He and his family will transition to Fort Bragg, N.C., where he will be attached to the 44th Medical Brigade, and work as a psychologist providing therapy and assessment services to military personnel and their families.

The army currently has 143 clinical psychologists stationed throughout the world.
