Area 4-Hers compete in District Communication Arts

Young people from Wells, Stutsman, Sheridan, Eddy and Foster counties competed on Thursday, May 30, in the 4-H District Communication Arts Contest held at Fessenden School. Communication Arts is the 4-H speech and demonstration competition that is held at the county, district and state levels. Participants are encouraged to use their own creativity and originality in preparing their public presentation. The Communication Arts program is open to any youth involved in extension youth programs and includes three age divisions.

The Cloverbud Division, youth finishing kindergarten through second grade, present but do not compete. The Junior division, youth 8-12 years old, and the Senior division, youth ages 13-18, compete to earn the opportunity to represent the district at the State Contest, which is held in July at Minot. Winners over the age of 13 are also provided a waiver for the Extension Youth Conference Registration fee.

All participants in the District Contest were presented with gifts. Medallions were provided to Champions in the Junior and Senior divisions. Rosettes were awarded to Honorable Mentions. Cloverbuds earned participation ribbons.

Wells County: Hanna Widicker, Interpretive Reading – Individual.

The 4-H Communication Arts program has five primary objectives:

• To help participants develop communication skills that are useful throughout a lifetime.

• To provide participants an opportunity to practice skills before a group.

• To provide participants an opportunity to gather and organize information, equipment and props for public presentation.

• To develop participants confidence in making public presentations.

•To evaluate and enhance communication skills.
