Local family to bring new hospitality option to New Rockford

When local farmer and rancher Travis Steele sat down to read the May 14, 2018 edition of the "New Rockford Transcript," he had no idea that a big idea was about to hit him. The USDA building on Highway 281 was being vacated by FSA and related staff in favor of a new downtown location. Upon seeing that the agency had no plans for the building, Travis had the sudden idea that the old building could be renovated for lodging.

"We saw a great need in our community for more lodging, and we are confident that this will help bring more people home to New Rockford for visits, provide lodging for people working in the area temporarily, and bring in travelers passing through town," Travis said.

Travis and his wife, Amy, expect the inn will benefit other businesses in town as well, by allowing more people to stay in town for longer periods of time. And they are right. In the Community Assessment conducted by the NRABC last fall, it was clear that lodging was a priority for businesses and residents alike. Whether it be a place to stay for out-of-town friends and families over the holidays, or a gathering space for events, visitors to New Rockford need more options when it comes to lodging.

Months passed before the Steeles were able to enter into a purchase agreement with the owners in November 2018. They finally signed the papers and purchased the building on March 1. From there, the two went straight to work on their vision to create an eight guest room hotel. The Steeles are now knee-deep into the renovation process, and with the help of local work crews, they expect to book their first guests this fall.

Rock Inn, as it will be called, will offer eight guest rooms including four double queen rooms, two king rooms, one king two-room suite, and one king ADA-accessible room. Each room will be equipped with a full bathroom and a kitchenette.

Amy explains that they decided to call it an inn not only due to its small scale but also to the personal touches it will offer. Guests can expect Rock Inn to feel a lot like a hotel, with a comfortable and inviting lobby, front desk reception, an ice machine, and even free onsite guest laundry. In addition, Rock Inn will feature a meeting room, which will be equipped with a refrigerator, sink and counter space, and will be available for professional meetings, parties or other gatherings.

One question both Travis and Amy have been frequently asked is whether or not they plan to offer a continental breakfast. "As of now it's not in our plans," said Travis. Amy was quick to add, "We have places in town that offer breakfast. It's important to us that our guests experience that."

As it stands now, Rock Inn looks a lot like the old USDA building, but readers can expect big changes this summer. In addition to a paint job, the Steeles have plans for other touches to enhance the building's curb appeal.

As Amy talked about her hopes for the front entrance, she said, "Travis and I want good things for the future of this community, and this is a way we can help with that. It's up to those of us who live here to invest in our community. It's a risk, but we're sure our little town will be worth it. After all we want our children to either live here or enjoy coming home."

Travis and Amy's children are quite young, and will have future opportunities to be part of this family-run business. In the meantime, the pair will be looking for part-time help with reception and housekeeping upon opening.
