U.S. Hwy 281 road work starts July 22

Work on U.S. Hwy. 281 through New Rockford is slated to begin today, July 22. The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) held a pre-construction meeting on Friday, July 12 in Devils Lake to give more details on the project.

Crews will work on the highway first, re-routing traffic to the frontage roads. During this time, the frontage roads will be converted into one-way streets with a 25 mph speed limit Northbound traffic will be detoured to the east frontage road, and southbound travelers will take the west frontage road.

A width restriction of 14 feet will be in place, and flaggers and pilot cars may be present. Motorists are urged to use caution in the construction zone and encouraged to observe all posted signs and traffic control devices. Every other access point off the highway will remain open to allow motorists to access local businesses.

Work to be done on the highway includes widening of the shoulders, resurfacing, installation of new storm drains in the ditch, and resloping of the ditch. The streetlights along Hwy. 281 will be removed on Tuesday and remain down for a period of time during construction.

Once the work on the highway is complete, the frontage roads will be rebuilt. During that phase of construction, the frontage roads will remain closed, and all traffic will be diverted to the highway.

NDDOT has set a target completion date of October 12 for the project. Contractors working on the project include Border States Paving, Naastad Brothers, 3D Specialties, LD Concrete and Pro Landscape.

As the project unfolds, read the Transcript for further updates and instructions.
