Top-seeded SNR Ruthers begin with two tourney wins

There were no pre-tournament jitters to be found when the SNR Babe Ruth team stepped onto their home turf for the first two rounds of the District 2 Tournament.

The top-seeded Black Sox junior nine immediately displayed the form that vaulted them to 12 wins in 14 league contests as well as a 14-3 overall record, and took easy victories of 19-2 over Harvey and 14-4 against Bottineau at Jim Johnson Park to advance to the winner's bracket semifinals Tuesday afternoon at Harvey's L.C. Loerch Field.

Coach Seth Soderholm's crop of 13-to-15 year olds marched out to a 4-1 lead after the first inning of their tourney debut, then blasted the doors wide open with a 14-run second.

The Black Sox had 13 hits in the first round, with Alex Harrison and Hunter Jacobson each providing three and a pair of runs batted in apiece, and scoring five times combined. Trevor Waldo and Caden Price had two hits and three RBIs.

Leadoff hitter Kaden Jensen had four stolen bases, while Koby Duda plated four runs for SNR against Harvey. Price got the win with five good innings, giving up just three hits and striking out eight while working around six walks.

Harvey's Elijah Nickelson had a double and two total hits, and Tim Swang had the other hit.

Game two pitted the young Sox against the Diamond Slugs of Bottineau, 15-10 winners over fifth-seeded Cando in their first round of play. Once again, SNR took early control, pushing across seven runs in the first two frames.

A substantial portion of that offense came from Harrison, with a double and four RBIs. He also threw four scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.

Matching Harrison with multiple hits was Jensen, who scored three runs along with Nick Berglund. Notching singles were Berglund, Jacobson, Connor Knatterud and Waldo.

Bottineau used four pitchers in the loss. Hits for the 'Slugs came from Riley Rybchinski (double), Ryder Pollman and Brooks Siemens.

The win allowed SNR to face off against Towner (see related article), who defeated Rolette/Rolla and Rugby in their opening two District 2 matchups. The SNR/Towner winner moved on to the championship game on Wednesday, with two opportunities to advance to the State B Tournament in Watford City.
