The New Rockford Park District Pink Sox ended their perfect season with a tournament in Devils Lake's Ruger Park on Tuesday, July 23.
As the undefeated No. 1 seed, the 'Sox had a first round bye that morning. Their second round competitor, Lakota, gave them quite a run, however. Lora Wobbema pitched a no-hitter the first inning. Paige Knatterud threw the rest of the game for New Rockford, allowing Lakota to score four runs over four innings.
Kelsie Belquist and Katie Allmaras both had a home run in the game. Emmie Belquist and Alivia Yri also each scored one for the locals. At the end of four, the 'Sox led by 1 after Belquist scored a second run. In the fifth, Knatterud hunkered down and allowed no runs, landing the 'Sox in the championship contest with a 5-4 win.
After a short break, the team was back on the field to face the No. 2 seed, Dakota Prairie. It was a slow start for the 'Sox, as only Logan Cudworth's hit landed her on base in the first inning.
Once they warmed up though, they didn't stop. The next three innings were gold for the locals, as Lora Wobbema, Paige Knatterud and Karsyn Wetzel each scored two runs, and Bailey Baumbach and Alivia Yri brought in one apiece.
Logan Cudworth was fire on the mound, as she pitched a shutout championship game. The few hits the Knights did manage were met by the quick gloves of the 'Sox. The final tally was 8-0, a solid finish for the Pink Sox.
The Ponytail League champions racked up 20 wins this season, even winning two against a tough Harvey team in non-league play on Monday, July 22. All 13 Pink Sox players are eligible to compete next year. Here's hoping they all come back for another fun season.
