New Rockford- Sheyenne School District public levy meeting Sept 9

The New Rockford- Sheyenne School District is proposing a modest 0.38 mill increase for 2020. The public levy meeting is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Citizens are encouraged to attend and comment on the district’s budget and proposed tax levy for 2020.

The taxable valuation for New Rockford-Sheyenne School District is estimated to be $15,569,781 across the district’s territory in four counties, including Eddy, Benson, Foster and Wells.

Tax projections for the New Rockford-Sheyenne School District are based on a total mill levy of 99 for 2018 and a projection of 99.38 mills for 2019. One mill is equivalent to one dollar in taxes per $1,000 in taxable value. Therefore, the district is estimated to bring in $15,569.78 per mill, a total of $1,547,324.74 in tax revenue from the 99.38 mills. This is approximately 30 percent of the total budget. The remaining revenue comes from state and federal educational aid, as well as grants.

Several expenditures have impacts the budget this year including a 17% increase on insurance premiums and staff salary increases. The expenses for operation and maintenance also increased with the addition of 1 FTE on the janitorial staff in lieu of part time and overtime required to meet the building’s cleaning needs. NR-S also took on an additional expense of Lake Area Career and Technical Center membership dues in the amount of $5,000 to offer students vocational training opportunities.

It is estimated that a residential home owner with property valued at $100,000 will see an increase of $1.71 in the tax bill due to the levy of the additional partial mill. Agricultural land would see an increase of $1.90 per $100,000 in value.

The final property tax levy amount will be decided at the School Board meeting to be held on Sept. 16 at 7 a.m.
