Hultgren Farms is 2019 Achievement Winner for Eddy County Soil Conservation District

Each year, the Eddy County Soil Conservation District awards one farm as the Achievement Winner. This year, Hultgren Farms of Warwick, N.D., is the winner.

Here is what Matt Hultren had to say about his farm and family.

My name is Matt Hultgren. I am a fourth generation farmer and rancher. I farm with my wife and parents. My wife is Megan, and we have three children: Madison age 10, Evan age 8 and Hadley age 3. My parents are Ervin and Susan.

We run a Black Angus cow-calf operation and raise wheat, soybeans, sunflowers, corn, oats and alfalfa.

Since 2011, we switched to no-till farming practices, which has greatly improved our soils and yields. Over the last eight years we have planted many rows of trees throughout the fields and added additional farmstead windbreaks for our cattle.

We also utilize portable windbreak panels to spread out the manure throughout our winter feeding pasture.

In 2017, I saw the need to cover our corn silage ground and we began seeding a cover crop mixture. In the next few years I would like to expand the use of cover crops.

A testament to the benefits of no-till became evident in early July this year. We received 2.4 inches of rain in one hour that washed out our gravel driveway. After the rain stopped, I drove out to my sunflower fields to see the damage. To my surprise, there was minimal to zero washing. The soil held.

On Easter Monday of 2019, my family and I erected and raised a cross on a hill that oversees our farms.
