George D. Brown, 85, of Devils Lake and formerly of New Rockford, passed away on Sept. 22, 2019 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks. Funeral Services were held on Sept. 28, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church, Devils Lake with Rev. Lori Broschat officiating. Burial with Military Honors was held at the Devils Lake Cemetery.
George David Brown was born on Feb. 22, 1934 at Chaseley, N.D., the son of Gustave and Louisa (Evans) Brown. He attended school in Bowdon and graduated from Bowdon High School in 1952.
George entered the United States Navy on Sept. 11, 1952. He served during the Korean War, stationed at New London, Conn., and also in Cuba. He served aboard the USS Bushnell and was honorably discharged in 1956. He continued to serve with the Navy Reserves until 1960.
While in Connecticut, George met Dorothy Holt at a roller skating rink and they were married on Feb. 26, 1955 at Malden, Mass. After George's discharge, he worked for the Black Label Beer Company as a truck driver.
In 1959, they moved to North Dakota and established their home in Sykeston, where he began training as a grain buyer for GTA and later managed the Brantford Elevator. He worked for the GTA Elevator Company in New Rockford, the Peavey Elevator in Devils Lake, Schwan Wholesale, and at the Town and Country Club.
George is survived by his wife Dorothy "Dotty"; daughters Theresa Schwan, Seattle, Wash.; Lori (Jeff) Oakland, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Debbie (Brian) Phillips, Minot; Lisa Brown, Des Moines, Iowa; and Rhonda Anderson, St. Peter, Minn.; son Scott (Darlene) Brown, Devils Lake; 16 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sisters Alice Neumiller, Jamestown and Jean Larson, Owatonna, Minn.; brother Gerald Brown, Bowdon, N.D.; many nieces, nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Richard, Norman, Evan and Alvin.
