Obituary: Lois Florhaug

Lois Bernice Florhaug, 99, of Kensal, died Dec. 6, 2019, in Golden Acres Manor, Carrington, N.D. The funeral service was held Dec. 13, 2019 at United Methodist Church, Kensal.

Interment will be at a later date in the Kensal Cemetery. Rev. Rick Loewen and Jeanne Sortland officiated. Special music was provided by Roger and Ross Florhaug and the Nelson family. Honorary pallbearers were Mike Odegaard, Susan Barth, Christie Gruber, Peder Florhaug, Jessica Eastman, Matthew Florhaug, Daniel Florhaug and Ross Florhaug.

Lois was born Aug. 10, 1920, in Bottineau, N.D., to Anton and Mabel (Hanse) Nelson. Lois graduated from Kensal High School in 1938. She attended Valley City State Teachers College earning a standard diploma in elementary education. Lois taught in a rural school in Stutsman County for two years, and in California for one year before returning to Kensal, where she taught at the Kensal Public School for many years.

Lois was married to Peder J. (Pete) Florhaug on Sept. 13, 1945.

Lois enjoyed music and even was selected to sing in the Vallejo, Calif., United Choral Society's performance of the 'Messiah' in 1944, while she was teaching at a government school there. She was also active in the Kensal Methodist Church, Homemakers and many other community activities.

Lois is survived by her daughter Kathy Odegaard, Bismarck; sons Steven (Karla) Florhaug, Austin, Texas, and Roger (Nadine) Florhaug, Kensal; brother Elwood Nelson, Lafayette, Colo.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; sisters, Mabel Mead and Margaret Ableidinger and son-in-law Walter Odegaard.
