Rockets topple Cards in season opener

New Rockford-Sheyenne began their boys basketball season at Carrington, on Monday, Dec. 16. Carrington jumped out to a 9-2 on a basket by Seth Nelson, with 5:04 to go in the first quarter. The Rockets went on a 13-2 and went up 15-11 on a hoop by Evan Ulrich with 1:44 to go in the first. A trey by the Cards Hudson Schmitz cut the lead to 15-14 and that concluded the first quarter scoring. The locals went on an 8-2 run on a bucket by Bo Belquist, making it 23-16 with 3:53 left until halftime. A trey by Nelson cut the lead to 23-19. NR-S went on an 8-0 run to close out the first half scoring. The Rockets outscored Carrington 16-6 in the third, and 17-10 in the fourth and NR-S cruised to a 64-35 win.

The Rockets had a good overall team effort on both ends of the court. Seth Nelson paced Carrington with a game high 24 points. The Rockets had good balanced scoring. Evan Ulrich led the way with 18 points. Bo Belquist had 16. Hunter Thompson was good for 12, and Nathan Holzwarth added 11. Carrington made 12 field goals, 7 of 9 free throws and committed 11 fouls. New Rockford-Sheyenne made 23 field goals, 10 of 14 free throws, and committed 11 fouls. Tyler Cook is again the head coach this season, Elliott Belquist is the assistant. The Rockets should a very good team this season. They will be one of the top teams in District 7 along with Four Winds- Minnewaukan and Dakota Prairie. Langdon-Edmore-Munich, Dunseith and St. John will likely be the top teams in District 8.

Carrington is a very young team this season but hopes to be very competitive as the season goes on. NR-S is now 1-0 overall.
