Baking Care of Business

Taryn Gores, age 11, of Hansboro is the owner of Towner County’s newest business. This St. John fifth grader has made her hobby into a business. Taryn is pictured in the “Turtle Mountain Star” with a batch of her creme de menthe cupcakes. She specializes in cupcakes but bakes all sorts of treats. She officially began her business “Taryn’s Treats” in August, and even with the demands of girls basketball, she netted nearly $1,000.

Breathing new life

Kyle Harding of Rolla spent the holidays with his family and recovering from a double lung transplant. Harding, who has spent most of his life managing the effects of cystic fibrosis, now has a new lease on life. According to the “Turtle Mountain Star,” Harding’s surgery was on Sept. 5, and he spent the next 12 days in a Minneapolis hospital before moving into an apartment near his treatment facility. It has taken Harding some time to get used to his new normal. Long gone are the days of multiple breathing treatments and more than 60 pills. How good it must be for Harding to breathe easy!

Investigation Discovery

“The New Salem Journal” reported that the 2006 murder of Mindy Morgenstern will be featured on Investigation Discovery’s “Murder in the Heartland.” Film crews just completed a week’s worth of filming in and around Valley City and New Salem in preparation for the docuseries hour long episode. The crew interviewed family and friends, as well as investigators who worked on the case. According to Greg Klien, a producer for the series, the episode will air sometime in June 2020. Moe Gibbs continues to serve a life sentence for Mindy’s murder.

Burglary at ND establishment nets thousands

A burglary took place at the Bypass Restaurant and Lounge in Crosby during the early morning hours of Saturday, Dec. 7, according to “The Crosby Journal.” Approximately $7,000 was taken. Local law enforcement said there was no sign of forced entry. In fact, no one was aware of the crime when the staff came in for work. The thief was able to locate a locked cash box with roughly $3,000 and then proceeded to take the off-sale cash drawer. Surveillance cameras show a single individual who authorities are still trying to identify.

Donation could be Skabo’s savior

The Skabo Lutheran Church stands tall and looks strong, but its age is catching up. With a mounting list of repairs that left the Skabo Cemetery Association feeling uneasy about the future. The Crosby Journal reported that the association kicked off their fundraising campaign with a $50,000 donation from Patrick and Tammy Sogard made through the Northwest North Dakota Community Foundation. The gift leaves the association optimistic in reaching their goal.

Fatal rollover near Park River

The “Lakota American” reported that a Pisek man died Friday, Dec. 20 when he was involved in a single-vehicle crash about 2.5 miles south of Park River. According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Bradley Lund, 35, was driving a 2004 Cadillac Escalade on 134th Ave NE, about 10:15 a.m., when his vehicle left the roadway, entered the west ditch and into a field. The vehicle continued to travel southwest until it vaulted over a railroad embankment. The vehicle continued to travel southwest until it vaulted over a railroad embankment. The vehicle overturned and came to a rest upside down. Lund died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

Work begins on removal of tipped crane

In October, a crane owned by Viant Crane Service of Bismarck was hired to remove an electric shed approximately six miles southwest of Linton. As the crane was unloaded, soft, wet ground gave way underneath it, causing it to tip and taking electrical wires along with it. Now, Roughrider crane service out of Fullerton has been hired to remove the crane, with an even larger, taller crane. Source: “Emmons County Record”

Historic Anamoose bank becomes steakhouse

According to the “Mouse River Journal,” the 1909 Steakhouse is now open for business in an historic structure that formerly housed an Anamoose bank. Their official opening was held Dec. 11. The 1909 Steakhouse is open seven days of week.
