Rockets cruise past Warriors

The first quarter was close but New Rockford-Sheyenne gradually pulled away as the locals defeated Warwick, by a final score of 74-47, in District 7 Boys Basketball action played at Warwick on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Warwick scored first on a trey by Mark Fassett with 7:30 to go in the first. New Rockford-Sheyenne went on a 7-0 run to go up 7-3 on two free throws by Hunter Thompson with 5:38 to go. A bucket by Kalem Jackson cut the lead to 7-5 with 5:08 to go.

The Rockets went on a 10-2 run to close out the quarter scoring, on a trey by Nathan Holzwarth as time expired. It was 17-7 Rockets after one. Two free throws by Paul Thiele cut the lead to 17-9 with 7:48 left until halftime. New Rockford-Sheyenne went on a 10-0 run and went ahead 27-9 on a bucket by Hunter Thompson with 5:00 remaining in the first half. The Rockets led at the intermission, 37-19. Two buckets by Bo Belquist, one by Evan Ulrich and one by Holzwarth gave the locals a 45-19 lead with 6:40 to go in the third. A bucket by Thompson with 0:05 left put the Rockets up 55-40 after three. The Rockets outscored Warwick 19-7 in the fourth and came away with a 74-47 win. The Rockets played better overall in the second half.

Warwick made 18 field goals, 4 of 8 free throws, committed 12 fouls. New Rockford-Sheyenne made 29 field goals, 8 of 15 free throws, committed 9 fouls. Paul Thiele paced Warwick

with 16 points. Mark Fassett added 11 points. The Rockets had excellent balance.

Hunter Thompson led the way with a game high 21 points. Bo Belquist had 18, Nathan Holzwarth had 14 and Evan Ulrich added 13. New Rockford-Sheyenne improves to 1-0 in District 7, and are now 5-1, overall. Next action for the Rockets is Monday, Jan. 20, here against Four Winds-Minnewaukan. First game is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
