Rockets split two in girls basketball

Hornets sting Rockets

New Rockford-Sheyenne played a good overall first quarter but after that, Harvey-Wells County took control and defeated the locals, by a final score of 59-19 in District 7 Girls Basketball action played at Harvey, on Thursday, Jan. 16. Kayahna Hopfauf did not play in this game for the Rockets, as she was out with a concussion.

The Rockets had a 10-7 lead on a basket by Ashlynn Benson, with 2:57 to go in the first. The Hornets then went on a 14-0 run to close out the quarter and led 21-10 after one. Neither team scored much in the second quarter and the Hornets held a 30-15 lead at the intermission. New Rockford-Sheyenne continued to struggle in the third quarter, as Harvey-Wells County led 50-17 after three.

The Hornets went on to win, by a final of 59-19. At times, the game was very physical and neither team took very good care of the ball. Mackenna Arnold led the Hornets with a game-high 15 points. Maggie Raue added 13 points. Hannah Haley paced the locals with 9 points. Harvey-Wells County made 20 field goals, 12 of 23 free throws and committed 15 fouls. The Rockets made seven field goals, 5 of 16 free throws and committed 19 fouls.

New Rockford-Sheyenne is now 1-1 in District 7 and 6-4 overall.

Rockets top Raiders

It was a tale of two halves, but New Rockford-Sheyenne ultimately defeated Lakota by a final score of 47-42 in District 7 Girls Basketball action, played here on Tuesday, Jan. 21. At times, it was a quick paced game. NR-S led 16-2 after one stanza, 29-10 at the intermission, 37-27 after three. Lakota rallied in the fourth with a 15-10 advantage, but it wasn't enough, and the Rockets came away with the 47-42 win.

Kylee Baumgarn paced Lakota with 21 points, and led all scorers. The Rockets had good scoring balance. Hannah Haley led the way with 14 points. Dani Bjerke and Kayahna Hopfauf each added 10 points.

The Raiders made 12 field goals, 14 of 21 free throws and committed 6 fouls. The locals made 22 field goals, 1 of 4 free throws and committed 20 fouls.

New Rockford-Sheyenne improves to 2-1 in District 7 and 7-4 overall. Next action for the Rockets is Monday, Jan. 27 against Four Winds-Minnewaukan in Minnewaukan. First game is set for 4:30 p.m.

Thursday, Jan. 30, Warwick comes to town. Game one is set for 4:30 p.m. Feb. 1, Langdon-Area-Edmore-Munich comes to town for a boys and girls doubleheader. Game one begins at 11 a.m.
