Locals outscore Knights

Overall it was a hard-fought game that featured six lead changes and four ties. The Rockets defeated Dakota Prairie by a final score of 58-50 in District 7 Boys Basketball action played at McVille before a good crowd on Tuesday, February 18.

A basket by Bo Belquist with 0:38 left rounded out first quarter scoring, and it was 14-11 Rockets after one. A basket by Evan Ulrich tied the game at 24-24 with 2:40 left in the second. Knights’ Tyler Loe cut the locals lead to 29-28 at halftime by making two of three free throws.

Dakota Prairie went on a 10-2 run and was up 38-31 on a basket by Tyler Loe with 2:46 remaining in the third. A bucket by Belquist with 0:15 left cut the Knight lead to 40-36 after three. The Rockets went on a big 14-2 run starting with a bucket by Hunter Thompson, giving the locals a 50-42 lead with 3:30 left in the game. A trey by Loe with 36 seconds remaining cut the lead to 55-50, but the Knights would get no closer and the Rockets came thru with a hard fought win.

Dakota Prairie made 16 field goals, 7 of 9 free throws, and committed 14 fouls. The Rockets made 23 field goals, 5 of 12 free throws and committed 8 fouls. Tyler Loe led the Knights with a game high 19 points. Jake Avdem added 14 points. Hunter Thompson led New Rockford-Sheyenne with 17 points. Bo Belquist added 16 points. The Rockets ended District 7 regular season play at 4-2 and are now 12-6 overall.

The District 7 Boys Basketball Tournament gets underway on Friday, Feb. 28 at the Sports Center in Devils Lake. The Rockets will begin tournament play as the #3 seed. Pairings were not available as of press time.
