New Rockford first grade students have the opportunity to celebrate Youth Financial Literacy Month even in this time of social isolation. The North Dakota State University Extension in Eddy County, local banks and credit unions partnered with New Rockford-Sheyenne Elementary to provide an activity to first-grade students on learning the importance of saving.
The ultimate goal is for students to learn positive money behaviors at an early age. As part of the lesson, NDSU Extension in Eddy County provided each student with a piggy bank that is theirs to keep. The Bank Forward and Community Credit Union in New Rockford purchased and provided each student a "Berenstain Bears Trouble with Money" book. First-grade parents are asked to call the school and arrange to pick up a student packet contain the book and bank starting Monday, April 6 or as soon as possible.
The activity takes the place of the Piggy Bank Pageant people of the community have seen and voted on the past two years. This year students and their families are asked to set a savings goal for the student and to decorate the piggy bank. They are then asked to take a picture with a smartphone or other digital device of the decorated piggy bank and share on social media platforms such as Twitter or with the tags of @BankForkward #NdsuExtensionFinancialLiteracy @CommunityCreditUnionNewRockford @nrsschool.org @NDSUspendsmart and @EddyCounty4HND
We hope to see some colorful and creating piggy banks!
