Graduation to go on as scheduled for May 24

The New Rockford- Sheyenne Board of Education granted temporary emergency powers to Superintendent Jill Louters. This action is in relation to an emergency powers declaration issued by the North Dakota School Board Association which allows local boards to issue temporary emergency powers to superintendents. The board’s approval grants the superintendent flexibility to respond appropriately amid the evolving crisis, to safeguard against the further spread of COVID-19. The superintendent will have the power to make changes to work schedules, curriculum, and school lunch distribution. These temporary powers will be in effect for the duration identified in the Governor’s Executive Orders issued on March 15 and 19.

Principal Baumbach addressed the issues of graduation and prom in light of the current CDC recommendations. As far as prom is concerned, the event has been suspended until the social restrictions have been lifted.

No changes have been made to graduation. Baumbach says, “Our goal is to hold graduation on May 24 as it was originally planned, however if the need occurs, we will make the decision to suspend graduation when appropriate.”

In terms of summer school, Becker advised that plans will continue as normal, with alternative plans that can be implemented should the need arise.

School board elections, which are slated for June 9, will be conducted by absentee ballot only this year.

Personnel Changes

Tara Seward submitted a formal request asking to rescind her previous proposal for a one-year leave of absence. Seward said, “The program is designed for working professionals and most teachers continue working while obtaining this degree. I am confident that I can be successful in both avenues.” The board approved the request.

The district will have two staff positions to fill for the 2020-21 year. High school social science instructor Jordan Brown has accepted a teaching position in another district. The board accepted his letter of resignation and thanked him for his five years of service.

A written proposal for a conditional consent to nonrenewal submitted by Karla Fuchs was also approved by the board.

The next school board meeting will be May 11 at 7 p.m.
