New water mains installed under Eighth Street

On Saturday, April 18, Carstenson Contracting began locating utilities under the 100 block of Eighth Street near the New Rockford Eagles Club and Bank Forward. Come Monday they were boring holes in the street to create a path for the new water main to travel. By Wednesday afternoon, the new blue PVC water mains were going in. In the picture at left, the water main is slowly pulled through the 12 in. bore hole, 8 ft. underground.

City officials, engineers and contractors agreed to prioritize the downtown area right away this spring so the work can be completed while traffic is light due to COVID-19 restrictions. Once Eighth Street is finished, the 800 and 900 block of Central Avenue will be the next priority. In next week's edition, we'll document all the steps in the boring process so readers can see how it all works.

Meanwhile, general contractor BEK Consulting began digging on First Avenue North near the Community Credit Union and St. John's Catholic Church late this week. The goal is to complete the "loop" by digging one block west to Second Street, then boring one block south to Central Avenue, and digging back up to the frontage road along Central Avenue. The goal is to complete those three blocks before the NDDOT returns to rebuild the frontage roads.
