This past weekend senior baseball players got a chance to take the field one last time. Organized by Bismarck High senior Skyler Strand and his mother, the Sandlot Showdown was held May 15 and 16 in Bismarck. The purpose was to allow parents of seniors to see their kids play one last time.
Teams from Bismarck, Mandan, Williston, Kidder County and Carrington/NR-S competed in the non-school sanctioned, player organized round-robin tournament.
Lisa Thompson of New Rockford, parent of senior Hunter Thompson, said players received information about the tournament via social media. Seniors from Carrington saw the invitation first and contacted New Rockford-Sheyenne friends to see if they wanted to join forces for a team.
All the NR-S seniors were eager for a chance to play, Thompson said. They played four games over the two-day event, winning one. Former Carrington and NR-S players were also on tap to serve as base coaches and offer advice.
