Fourth of July celebration taking shape

Parade entries are sought for New Rockford's annual Independence Day Parade, which will go on as scheduled at 10 a.m. on July 4. Anyone who wishes to participate in the parade should call Surety Title Company at (701) 947-2446 to get on the list. Participants are encouraged to put candy in small resealable bags this year rather than throw out individual handfuls.

The route will also be extended this year to allow plenty of room for residents and visitors to space out and practice social distancing. For example, the parade will go down Third Avenue North past All Veteran's Memorial Park from the swimming pool to 13th Street. If the streets are too crowded in your normal spot, bring a chair and enjoy the show from the park. The preliminary parade route is published on page A6.

The annual Stars and Jars fundraiser for fireworks is also underway. Purchase a star for $2, $5 or $10 at Miller's Fresh Foods or Bakers Dozen. There are also several businesses hosting donation jars, so drop in a few bucks in if you see one. Volunteer firefighters will kick off the fireworks display at dusk on July 4.

Unfortunately, Sheyenne has canceled its traditional Independence Day events due to COVID-19. There will be no parade, BBQ meal or rodeo in Sheyenne on July 4. The Lions Lucky Duck Race in New Rockford has also been canceled.

Any business or organization that is planning events for July 2-5 is encouraged to email the Chamber of Commerce at [email protected]. The Chamber will again make posters and advertise all events scheduled for the weekend in newspapers, on radio and online through social media.
