The U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Office on Violence Against Women awarded $607,630 to Spirit Lake Tribe.
The funds will be used to strengthen the ability of the tribe to exercise its sovereign authority to respond to violent crimes committed against women and to ensure perpetrators of violent crimes committed against women are held accountable for their criminal behavior.
The Tribal Governments Program, Purpose Area 5 of the 2020 Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation, was created in Title IX of the Violence Against Women Act of 2005 and amended by 34 U.S.C. 10452. The Tribal Governments Program is designed to fulfill the following goals of Title IX: (1) decreasing the incidence of violent crime against Indian women; (2) strengthening the capacity of Indian tribes to exercise their sovereign authority to respond to violent crimes committed against Indian women; and (3) ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes committed against Indian women are held accountable for their criminal behavior.
The Spirit Lake Tribe is a federally recognized Tribe located in east central North Dakota on the shores of Devils Lake. The Spirit Lake Tribe Victims Assistance Program will implement this project. With this funding, the Spirit Lake Tribe Victims Assistance Program, in collaboration with the First Nations Women’s Alliance, will: a) assist victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence by participating on the Multi-Disciplinary Team of the Lake Region Social Services Coalition; b) provide at least one training on the dynamics of sexual and domestic violence for tribal court and/or tribal law enforcement personnel; and c) support two full-time victim advocates who will provide direct advocacy, social, and support services for victims.
The timing for performance of this award is 36 months.
