Humans and dogs have stood side by side for millenia. In fact, archaeological evidence suggests that dogs were domesticated as early as 20,000- 40,000 years ago.
Humans worked to tame and breed wolves, and by 7,000 years ago, dogs occupied every continent inhabited by humans. The breeds we have today seem a far cry from the wolf, with their short snout and sweet disposition. At this point we would have struggled to recognize these animals as the dogs we know today. Eventually, through selective breeding, the dog would become a gentle working companion.
No wonder some of us find ourselves drawn to these furry friends. Just the same, it is of no surprise that the early residents of Eddy County also found comfort in their canine counterparts.
Whether dogs were used for hunting or protection, their presence through Eddy County's history is apparent. A quick search of the Eddy County Museum archives yields nearly two dozen entries for dogs, the majority of which tend to show up in photographs.
Each of the dogs are as unique as their owners. Some stand proud next to a string of ducks while others smile from ear to ear as they stand by their best friend. A few even found their way into formal photographs as well as public street scenes.
