Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived in downtown New Rockford at 2 p.m. Saturday. Local equine enthusiast Bill Ziegler led them through town on his horse-drawn cart, accompanied by Ervin Longnecker. About 90 youth and their families saw Santa outside the Rockford Theatre that afternoon. Kids left letters to Santa in the mailbox outside the theatre and received treat bags filled with gift certificates, candy canes and other sweets courtesy of the New Rockford Area Chamber of Commerce and New Rockford Lions Club. Their letters to Santa will be published in next week's Christmas edition of the "Transcript", along with more photos from the socially-distanced event.
More than 80,000 North Dakota residents have recovered from COVID-19 since March, and one of New Rockford's eldest residents is among them. Ervin Longnecker, who turned 102 years old on Dec. 3, was sickened with the virus last month.
