Back to Ballin': Rocket boys rout Cards in opening set

University of Jamestown recruit and NR-S center Evan Ulrich has a little bit more incentive this year to prove himself worthy of the Jimmies' attention lavished upon him.

The 6'7" post player made the start of his 2020-21 boys' basketball season count, pouring in 19 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four assists and two blocks to help the Rockets to an easy 52-23 win over Carrington in the season opener for both teams Monday evening, December 14 in New Rockford.

The Rockets were never challenged in the contest, surging out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter and holding the Cardinals scoreless for the first four minutes before the visitors got on the board with a Jack Erickson layup.

After that point to the end of the first half, the young CHS squad contained NR-S somewhat, but the offense couldn't get hot and the Rockets enjoyed a 24-13 advantage after two quarters.

One big key for the Rocket lead was the perimeter shooting. Johnny Grann hit three three-pointers in the first half and Koven Walford added another. As for the Cards, their deep-range game abandoned them to the tune of 0-for-11 for the contest.

The second half started much like the first did, to the detriment of Carrington. A 15-0 run for the Rockets did not stop until nearly five minutes had elapsed and Lucas Hendrickson stopped the spurt to make it 39-15.

Hendrickson would finish as Carrington's top scorer with 11 points, and added four steals. No other player would finish with more than four.

On the boards, Hudson Schmitz's 13 rebounds allowed the Cards to have a 36-33 advantage in that statistic. Hendrickson also added six rebounds and Erickson five.

For NR-S, Nick Berglund had a strong supporting effort with 11 points and a team-high four steals. Grann, along with his threes, also had contributions from the glass with six rebounds.

NR-S (1-0) played in the CNDC Tournament this past Thursday through Saturday, and as the higher seed, hosted the Rolla Bulldogs Thursday night in the event's opening round.

On Tuesday, the Rockets travel to Glenfield to meet up with the Titans of Griggs/Midkota in their final game before the Christmas break. The junior high/JV/varsity slate starts at 4:30 p.m. in the MHS Gym.
