Girls fall to HWC, shoot lights out against Cavalier

New Rockford-Sheyenne had about as different of a two-game swing as a team could possibly have during this past week of girls' basketball action.

On January 14, the Rockets couldn't get much of anything to fall in a 57-34 District 7 loss to Harvey-Wells County, but made up for that with an 83-59 shootout victory over the Cavalier Tornadoes in non-regional play on Tuesday, January 19. Both games were played at the NR-S Gym.

In the opening contest, each team had issues finding the nets early, with HWC taking a 7-4 lead after one. The struggles didn't last long for the Hornets, as they put up scoring totals of 16 and 18 points in the second and third quarters while holding NR-S to nine tallies in each instance.

Dani Bjerke paced NR-S with nine points, while for the Hornets, Kalyn Keller (16 points), Maggie Raue (12) and Zoe McKinven (10) all provided the bulk of the HWC offense.

The Hornets boosted their overall mark for the season to 3-5 with the win, and 2-1 in District 7. NR-S (0-2) dropped their second district matchup this season.

Five nights later, the Rockets had their biggest offensive night of the season, racking up 83 points to outdistance the visiting Tornadoes from Region 2.

Bjerke hit four threes and led all scorers with a 24-point output.

Kennedy Demester contributed 14, and 11 points apiece came from Kelsie Belquist and Mya Cudworth.

With the win, the Rockets improved to 4-5. Cavalier (6-3) was led on the scoresheet by Rylen Burgess with 21 points, along with 12 from

Jade Kihne.
