First Lutheran Church kicked off the season of Lent with Ash Wednesday service on February 19 at 6 p.m. This year Ash Wednesday was approached much differently than in years past to assure the safety and well-being of the attendees. As members walked into the sanctuary, they were greeted at the door by helpers offering prefilled communion cups and materials needed to receive ashes. In lieu of the traditional practice of having the pastor draw a cross on the forehead of each person, Pastor Amy Kippen instructed the congregation to use the ash filled swab provided to draw a cross on either their own forehead or their neighbor's, if they chose.
This year's Lenten series is focused on the theme "Boundless," which is derived from the book "Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion" by Greg Boyle. The book is one of Pastor Amy Kippen's favorites and she expresses that it has a great message, is very inspirational and is any easy read. From week to week members will read approximately 40 pages of the book and during each service they will reflect on what they read similar to a book club.
All are welcome to attend Lenten services at First Lutheran. Reading is not required but is encouraged to gain the full perspective of the series.
