The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets headed to Langdon to take on the Cardinals in the first round of the Region 4 girls basketball tournament on Monday, Feb. 22. The Cardinals defeated the Rockets 44-23.
In the first quarter, freshman Kelsie Belquist put up two field goals. Cassie Longnecker and Chloe Heinz also brought in one field goal each. Jaya Henderson of the Cardinals put in two three-pointers and was sent to the line to put in one free throw. Morgan Freije put up two field goals in the first quarter to take a 14-8 lead on the Rockets.
During the second quarter, no points were made by the Rockets. The Cardinals added six field goals in the second quarter. The Langdon Area Edmore Munich Cardinals were now ahead 26-8.
After half time, the Rockets came back ready to fight. Belquist put up a field goal along with Dani Bjerke who also put up a field goal and was sent to the line to put in two free throws. Kennedy Demester was also sent to the line to put in two of three free throws. For the Cardinals, Kaylee Lowery was able to put up one field goal. The Rockets were now down 28-16.
Langdon wasn't ready to lose to the Rockets. Marlee Hetletved put in one three-pointer and a field goal. Cora Badding put in two field goals along with Meridith Romfo who put in one field goal. Freije also put up a field goal and was sent to the line twice to put in three of four free throws. Longnecker put in one three-pointer. Heinz and Belquist put up two field goals, but it wasn't enough to catch the Cardinals.
Belquist led the Rockets with eight total points. Longnecker was behind her with five points and Bjerke and Heinz brought in four points each. For the Cardinals, Henderson and Freije brought in nine points each. Lowery put up seven points and Badding put up six points.
The Rockets finished their season with 10 wins and 10 losses. Congrats on the 2020-21 basketball season.
