Lowell was born in Drake, N.D., the second son of Werner D. Lutz and Maude (Dunbar) Lutz. He spent most of his life on the farm, which was homesteaded by his grandfather Lee Dunbar, at Glenfield, N.D. Lowell graduated from Glenfield High School as salutatorian of his class in 1957. He then attended Valley City STC before enlisting in the U.S. Army. Lowell was stationed at Fort Carson. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Glenfield and took over the family farm in 1962.
Lowell raised Hereford cattle and small grains. In the 80's, he switched to Black Angus. Lowell believed in preserving the land, so he began practicing no-till farming. He instilled this belief in his son Greg.
Lowell did not have a specific hobby, but he was an avid reader. Even when his eyesight was failing, he would read his newspapers and numerous farm magazines. He shared his research with Lona and Greg. Greg took over the farm in 2018, but Lowell still gave advice and continued reading farm publications.
Lowell is survived by his wife, Lona, and his son Jared (Lena) and five grandchildren, West Fargo, N.D.; two sisters, Pat (Don Jahner) Huber, Linton, N.D., and Sandra (John) Hendrickson, Lewiston, Idaho; sisters-in-law Shelva Lutz, Mauldin, S.C. and Margaret Lutz, Phoenix, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his son Greg, his baby daughter Gracie, his brothers Gary and Doug, his nephews Ernest and David, and his niece Lori.
