Mustangs defeat SNR Black Sox at Tolna

The combined forces of Midkota, Dakota Prairie, Lakota and Griggs Co. Central’s hardball boys registered two wins (6-2 and 4-3) in the varsity and JV ranks over the SNR Black Sox.

Both games were played in Tolna, and the first game results improved the Mustangs’ record to 2-2 and 1-1 in Region 3 play. SNR fell to 0-3 in the league and 1-4 overall.

Midkota got on the board first with two runs in the opening inning, courtesy of cleanup batter Cole Hendrickson’s single to drive in Garrett Haakenson, and a pair of wild pitches allowing Cade Stein to score. Both runners got on base via a walk.

The Mustangs added another run in the second, as Holden Lenz led off with a hit and later scored on a Brody Berg groundout.

SNR got within 3-1 on a Nick Berglund sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the third, scoring Caden Price, but the ‘Stangs answered back in the fourth when Zach Gibson cracked an RBI double to make it 4-1. They would add single runs in the fifth (Hendrickson stealing home) and sixth (Kaleb Short single), while the Black Sox’s remaining run came in the fifth on Berglund’s run-scoring single to plate Kaden Jensen.

Koby Duda took the loss for SNR, working three innings before giving way to Berglund and later Johnny Grann. Hendrickson worked a strong six innings for the Mustangs to pick up the win.

All recording two hits for Midkota were Ross Thompson, Stein and Hendrickson, and James Vollmer, who also had a single. For SNR, Berglund had two hits, and the other singles were contributed by Jensen, Price, Grann, Hunter Jacobson and Alex Harrison.

The junior varsity game went to extra innings, and Midkota took that one with a tally in the bottom of the sixth.

The loss spoiled a decent effort from SNR’s Keaton Cudworth on the hill, as he allowed three runs in five innings. Connor Knatterud took the loss, but was the offensive star with a triple and another hit to finish 2-for-3 with a stolen base.

Hits for Midkota included Preston Lee’s double, a two-run single by Dresyn Hanson, Landon Sundeen’s RBI hit, and Keegan Gjovik and Anthony Bullis had the other knocks in the books for the Mustangs.

Kyle Johnson got the win in relief for M/DP/L/GCC.
