Sheyenne-New Rockford earned a 2-0 victory against regional opponent Midkota/Dakota Prairie/Lakota/Griggs County Central at home on April 27, avenging their loss from last Thursday. Evan Ulrich took the hill for the home team and held the visitors scoreless, while striking out 14, and walking only one in a complete game effort.
The pitching was strong on both sides. Trent Ekren for the Mustangs scattered eight hits and struck out five in a complete game loss.
SNR's first run was taken off the board in the second inning upon appeal at the plate. SNR came back in the third and scored the first run that counted using small ball. Kaden Jensen walked with one out. He then stole second and advanced to third on a dropped third strike. With two outs, Nick Berglund drove Jensen home on a line drive single to center field.
Ulrich did not allow anyone to reach base until the fourth inning when he hit the lead-off batter, Garrett Haakenson. Ulrich was able to work around the hit batter and a walk to Kaleb Short in the inning and leave the runners stranded.
The home team scored their insurance run in the fifth inning. Jensen singled on a line drive to center field. This was followed by another line drive single by Caden Price, on which Jensen advanced to third. After Price stole second, Berglund was intentionally walked to load the bases. The next batter, Alex Harrison hit a sacrifice fly to score Jensen.
Ulrich continued his dominant pitching performance in the following innings, scattering three hits and walking none, nailing down the win.
In the JV game, the warmer weather seemed to warm up the bats. SNR won that contest going away, 12-5.
The Mustangs scored the first three runs off of SNR starter, Trevor Waldo. Waldo threw 12 pitches and faced only three batters before being replaced by Brody Weisenburger. Weisenburger pitched into the third inning when Connor Knatterrud took over. Knatterud finished the game and earned the win for the Black Sox.
SNR's win was powered by big third and fourth innings. The third inning started off with walks by Kage Walford and Knatterud and a single by Keaton Cudworth. From there, it was all downhill for the Mustangs with more walks, wild pitches and errors. There was more of the same in the fourth inning. Lucas Yri started off the inning with his second hit of the game. DJ Mudgett scored the final run for the Black Sox on a Haydon Meier hit to right field.
Dresyn Hanson started the game for the Mustangs and pitched into the third inning. Gage Flaagan came into the game in relief and took the loss. The Mustangs could only muster four hits in the game by Flaagan, Hanson, Landon Sundeen and Trae Lillehaugen.
SNR had hits from Yri (2), Weisenburger (2), Cudworth, Meier and Bradyn Collier.
